Garmin Dash Cam Tandem Review

Garmin is a well-known brand that has long been in the GPS business. But they have also branched out over the years with various products such as dash cams. We’ll be taking a look at one of those dashcams in a moment.

In the past, Garmin has experimented with Dash-Cams, they built the DriveAssist which in principle was a great Sat-Nav unit, but it had one problem.  The problem was you really only ever used the dash-cam, when you used the sat-nav.  If you did not need directions, you did not use the dash-cam, and this basically defeats the objective of having the dash-cam in the first place.

The whole point of the dash-cash cam is too record your driving.  In the event of an accident, you can see whose fault it was, but if you're only recording when you're using directions, it doesn't work.  For this reason, Garmin have brought us the dash-cam mini, and this dash-cam tandem.

The Tandem might be one of Garmin’s
best dash cams available. It proves itself to be excellent in quality within its many features. But the question is: will it be the best option for you?

At the price that it’s going for, it might be worth every penny. But let’s just say dash cams like this don’t come cheap. If you are looking for a high-quality dashcam that will be worth the investment, you may want to read on to learn more about the Garmin Dash Cam Tandem. Now, let’s dive into some of the features of the dashcam so you know what to expect:

Garmin Dash Cam Tandem Review

Of course, we kick off this review with one of its core features. Garmin has long been offering GPS and navigational devices for a long time. So it comes as no surprise that it’s included in the Dash Cam Tandem.

With its GPS, it includes voice commands. You can set the destination using the sound of your voice and the device does the rest. Not bad for a dashcam that can actually do it all.

Pro's & Con's

Now that we’ve taken a look at some of the major features, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons so you know what to expect from the Garmin Dash Cam Tandem:

Pro's

  • Heat/Cold tolerance: This dashcam has the ability to handle temperatures ranging from 176 degrees to temperatures well below freezing. One caveat though, it may not handle the worse summer conditions. So if you live in an area where it consistently reaches triple digits, you may want to keep it in a cool place like a garage.
  • Compatible with SDcards up to 512GB: For a dashcam, it can handle plenty of space. While it can hold 16GB cards, it has the compatibility to handle SD cards of 512GB. That’s plenty of space for when you want to store a lot of 45 to 60-minute video clips.
  • Impact detection: If your vehicle comes into the slightest contact while your vehicle is parked, the camera will detect and record what triggered the action. This is perfect in the event of someone accidentally bumping into your vehicle.

Con's

  • Mounting options are limited: Unfortunately, mounting options are limited to the dashboard. So you may not be able to clip it below that or above a visor. This makes the dash cam lacking in the versatility department. But it might be a necessary evil since you’ll want to see what’s going on in every corner of your vehicle.

Dual Lens Dash Cam

This dashcam comes with a dual-lens. This is perfect if you are using it to keep track of what’s going on while you’re driving. You can use this to monitor the backseat so your children are safe.

The front-facing camera gives you the ability to record videos at either 1080p or 1440p. The rear-facing camera will film at 720p quality. Both cameras will record video that clocks at 30 frames per second (Note: there are no adjustments for this. It’s 30 FPS...nothing below or beyond that).

The lenses are the size of a quarter, which makes it small but subtle. It won’t look like you are obviously recording something. If you are an Uber or Lyft driver that wants to keep yourself and your passengers safe, this is the perfect dash cam you’ll want for your vehicle.

Night Vision

No dashcam is complete without built-in night vision. Both the interior and exterior videos will be shot with high-quality video while the night vision is activated. This way, you’ll be able to see what really goes on both inside and outside your vehicle.

No more having to deal with dark footage that makes things hard to recognize. When it comes to safety and security, night vision is a must. With black and white night vision, it will be enough to pick up facial features.

Remote Connectivity

One of the coolest things about this dash cam is that you are able to access it with your smartphone. Since it doesn’t have a screen where you can watch your screen captures, you can view them on your smartphone using the included app.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a dashcam that is rich in features and can definitely be worth the investment, the Garmin Dash Cam Tandem might be exactly what you’re looking for. There is no doubt what this puppy can do regardless if its day or night.

Once you put this to good use, you will simply be amazed by the video quality. You’ll also be equally impressed by most of its abilities like 360-degree filming, night vision videos, and excellent audio quality.
