Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT-D SatNav Review

Garmin DriveLuxe

The Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT is Garmin’s all new 2017 sat nav for your car and comes in two slightly different models the "S" and the "D". The DriveLuxe is the premium version of this range of sat nav nav’s and whilst it does come with a selection of extra features that help your drive, there are problems

Personally I don’t like it and think there are better value for money options on the market. That all said, if you’ve got money to burn and are looking for a top of the range sat nav for your car, the Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT should be at the top of your list.

"S" Vs. "D"

As with all the latest range of Garmin Sat Nav’s, the DriveLuxe 51 LMT comes in a “S” Model and a “D” model which stands for Sateliite and Digital.

The Digital version (Garmin DriveLuxw 51LMT-D) comes with a digital information feed which allows the sat nav to be fast and more accurate with both the quantity of information and how it reaches your sat nav. The key downside of the Digital Garmin Sat Nav’s is the price, they’re over £60 more expensive that the Satelite version or the “S” Model.

The Satellite version (Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT-S) comes with a traditional satelite feed where the sat nav connects with satellites to provide directional information. The benefit of this model is the price which is much cheaper, however you do take a hit in performance, not so much in inner cities, but more in the countryside where trees and mountains have a tendency to block sat nav’s from satellites.

What best really depends on how you’re going to use the sat nav. If you’re like me and live in the city spending 99% of my time driving around the city, then then actually the “Satellite” version is perfect, however there have been times over the last few months driving through the countryside where the “S” version has let me down and stopped working.

Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT-D SatNav Review

As I mentioned previously, the Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT is the all new 2017 replacement for the already very good DriveLuxe 50 which forms part of Garmins premium sat nav range.

Personally I would not recommend it as one of the best sat nav’s across the range as I don’t feel it offers value for money. That all said, its a great sat nav with plenty of features to help you along your route.

The DriveLuxe 51 is the top of range model and therefore comes with a fantastic metal designed unit with a crystal clear five inch, pinch and zoom, touchscreen and that offers high resolution coloured maps and directions.

Switching on the sat nav, it quickly powers up to reveal Garmin menu interface where you can enter your destination, look for places to go or even set up the range of smart capabilities from bluetooth to allow for hands free calling to LiveTrack that allows you to connect to your smartphone for live on-street parking and Incident notification that allows you to send a message to your loved ones if you have been in an accident

After you have entered your destination, the Sat nav springs into life and brings up your directions. The five inch screen is a resolution screen meaning that your directions are very easy to see on the screen whether during the day or at night. The high resolution screen also means the maps a perfectly clear and really show the detail.

As with all Garmin’s, the DriveLux comes with UK and European Maps (45 Countries), free lifetime of the unit map updates and free traffic alerts and updates. When you come to a difficult junction, the sat nav offers lane assist and a dual screen options meaning that one side of the screen can show your map options, with the other showing route information.

Unlike many cheaper navigators, the DriveLuxe comes with a built-in Wi-Fi to help easily update both the maps and the all new Trip Adviser places of interest.  In the past, Garmin's have always used a massive database that listed millions of difference places and their locations.  Today with this Trip Adviser feature, you can now not only choose from a huge range of places along your route, but also read reviews from others who have already been to that location to help you make your decision.

Other key features we like include driver alerts for dangerous curves, speed changes, railroad crossings, school zones, speed cameras, fatigue warning, Bluetooth hands-free calling and voice-activated navigation.  You even hook your smartphone up to your navigator for live information such as live park information at your destination.

Follow Up

Overall the Garmin DriveLuxe 51LMT-D SatNav Review has showed that it's a fantastic satnav that comes with a range of different features and options to help you drive to your destination.  We do like it, however it's expensive.  The DriveLuxe could never be considered as a value for money satnav, however if you want the best Garmin satnav on the market in 2018 then pick up the DriveLuxe 51LMT-D.
